Yemeni news sites have broadcast information in recent days about the deployment by the Sultanate of Oman of a Chinese air defense system on its border with Yemen.
The deployment of this system coincided with events in Al-Mahra and Hadramawt governorates in eastern Yemen, reflecting growing fears among Omanis about the repercussions of these events.
It was reported that the Chinese SkyShield system arrived in the Sultanate of Oman recently.
According to the Aden Al-Ghad newspaper, the photos recently published on social networks were taken in the Omani border region, near Al-Mahra governorate, in the far east of Yemen.
The SkyShield system is one of the advanced defensive systems based on laser technology, designed to intercept drones and suicide drones, and is used to protect vital installations and borders from low-altitude aerial threats.
The timing of the deployment of the defense system is seen as an indication of the extent of Omani concerns over the repercussions of changes on the ground in eastern Yemen and the possibilities of security tensions extending to border contact zones, in light of the country’s fragile political and military scene.
